Abstract

352,239. Air screws. AMERICAN PROPELLER CO., 220, Grindal Street, Baltimore, U.S.A. June 30, 1930, No. 19798. Convention date, June 28, 1929. [Class 114.] In a variable pitch air screw wherein the blades are automatically adjusted in response to centrifugal force there is provided a train of gears including a known irreversible gear between the controlling element and the blade. Each blade 1 has at its root a pinion 6 adapted to be driven at opposite diameters by pinions 7, 8 on stub shafts which also carry worm wheels 9, 10 meshing with worms 14, 15 on shafts 16 within the hub and parallel with the propeller shaft. Exterior to the boss the shafts 16 have pinions 17 which mesh with an internal pinion 18 on a casing 20, this casing being supported on ball bearings 23, 24 on an extension 25 of the shaft. Connecting the casing 'with this extension are two oppositely-wound spiral members which by reason of their inertia under rotation have a capacity for turning a casing 20 relative to the hub and thus operating the train of gears for adjusting the propeller blades. Additional control may be effected by providing the casing 20 with wind vanes.
