Abstract
Corpses and anatomical specimens are embalmed or preserved by placing them in a closed chamber on a mattress impregnated with chemicals serving to generate gaseous formaldehyde and with hygroscopic substances such as glycerine or calcium chloride to absorb the heat of the reaction and to dry the gas. The corpse or specimen is treated for a period of about forty hours and may then be withdrawn from the chamber. According to an example the mattress contains trioxymethylene, vegetable carbon, potassium permanganate, calcium chloride and pine or fir sawdust, the whole being moistened with a 40 per cent solution of formaldehyde in water. Specifications 15368/97, [Class 81, Medicine &c.], 261,908 and 269,442, [both in Class 81 (i), Disinfecting &c.], are referred to.
