Abstract
Vegetable products, including fruits, tubers and seeds are preserved by storing in an enclosed space and treating alternately with nitrogen, or a gaseous mixture rich in nitrogen obtained by circulating the air withdrawn from the enclosed space through a vessel containing an oxygen-absorbing chemical and supplying additional nitrogen to bring the pressure in said space to normal, with atmospheric air which is cooled, e.g. to 10 DEG C. The preserving atmosphere may be replaced at intervals of 24 to 144 hours, depending on the nature of the products treated, with the fresh cooled air. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modification of the process in which the treatment with cooled air is omitted. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
