[Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v).] A television receiver comprises a cathode ray tube operated by currents of substantially uniform intensity interrupted to correspond with the light and shade of the picture, so as to prevent the position of the scanning ray being distorted by the varying intensity of the scanning ray. Thus, Fig. 1 represents the operating currents for very bright grading (a) through to dark e. At the transmitter, the lightsensitive cell 2, Fig. 2, controls the time interval between the discharges of a glow discharge device 1 feeding the grid of a valve 4. A variable condenser 3 adjusts the frequency of discharge, and the resulting signals are transmitted to the receiver. The frequency of interruption of the picture signals should be as great or greater than the highest analysed frequency of the picture signals.
