Abstract
351,020. Plate heat exchange apparatus. HAMMOND, C. F. and SHACKLETON, W., 28, Victoria Street, London. March 19, 1930, No. 8842. [Class 64 (iii).] A heat exchanger consists of heatinsulating diaphragms c, c<1> separating plates a, b formed with channels a<1>, a<2>, b<1>, b2 on their faces for the flow of heat-exchanging fluids. Spiral ribs may be formed on the crests and depths of the spiral corrugations which form the passages to increase the cross section of the channels. Each plate a or b is provided with peripheral ports l, m communicating with its upper and lower channels and a central port n leading from the upper channel of one plate to the lower channel of the plate below. The diaphragms c are provided with ports coinciding with ports l, m and diaphragms c<1> are provided with a central port p<1> coinciding with the port n and a port p which places the lower channel of a plate in communication with the upper channel of the plate below. One of the heat-exchanging fluids enters at port f in the endplate d, and passes through a port in diaphragm c and port m in the upper plate .a to the channel a<1> of the latter. On reaching the centre it passes through ports n, p<1>, n in plates a, c<1>, b into the channel b<2> of the next plate b through which it flows to the periphery and enters the next plate a, finally leaving at port f<1> in the endplate d<1>. The other fluid enters through port f<3> in plate d<1> and port l in the bottom plate b into its channel b<1> and flows inwardly and through the port p into the lower channel a<2> of the plate above and thus to the top of the pile. The endplates d, d<1> are provided with spiral ribs e2, e<3> coinciding with the corrugations adjacent heat-exchange plates.
