Abstract

357,605. Plate heat exchangers. SELIGMAN, R., 51, Parkside, Wimbledon, and ALUMINIUM PLANT & VESSEL CO., Ltd., Point Pleasant, Wands worth, both in London. May 24, 1930, No. 16057. [Class 64 (iii).] In plate apparatus for evaporating, concentrating, or condensing fluids, of the kind comprising plates having ribs or internal partitions forming passages for the treated fluid and the heating medium, as described in Specifications 223,033 and 225,109, [both in Class 64 (iii), Surface apparatus &c.], each plate is formed with free spaces a, b, Fig. 1, at the top and bottom to provide, when the plates are assembled, inlet and outlet channels respectively for the liquid to be treated and the heating or cooling liquid. The liquid to be treated flows from the inlet to the outlet channels through passages d between the plates. These passages may be divided by vertical ribs d<1> on the plates. The heating or cooling medium flows from the inlet e through sinuous passages formed by partitions c<1> in the plates to the outlet f. The sinuous passages may decrease in area towards the direction of flow of the heating medium. Concentrated liquid may be conducted from the upper channel b back to the lower channel a. In an apparatus for treating a liquid in stages, series of plates are divided by a plain plate n. Fig. 14, and concentrated liquid is conducted from the upper channel of one series through a return passage l in a plate i to the lower channel of the next series. A plate k intermediate the stages is so formed as to allow vapour to pass from the first stage of concentration into the heating passages of the next stage.
