Abstract

350,964. Ball-and-ring mills. WARD, S. A., Wybourn, Cricket Inn Road, Sheffield. March 18, 1930, No. 8608. [Class 59.] The crushing trough 1 of a ball and ring mill is surmounted by an annular chamber formed by an outer stationary casing 4 and an inner rotary casing 5, the material being fed to an annular plate extending from the casing 5 and moved by centrifugal force to the outer edge thereof on its way to the crushing trough. As shown, the casing carries three annular plates 11, 12, 13 and stationary downwardly directed rings 16 projecting from the casing 4 are interposed. The balls 19 are driven by rollers mounted on the underside of the ring 13 which is connected by arms 6 to the central driving shaft 7. The rate of feed is determined by the speed of rotation and the extent to which the rings 11, 12 are dished. The material is fed through an aperture 23 in the cover plate 10 which carries a depending sleeve 8 which acts as a bearing for the casing 5. Hot air or gas to dry the material may be drawn down through the annular chamber and up through the casing 5 in which case the ground material is withdrawn by the hot air or gas, the flow of which may be effected by the apparatus described in Specification 351,129.
