Abstract

186,956. Miller, D. J. G., and Lloyd, R. A. May 13, 1921. Roller-and-ring mills. -In a mill for grinding or pulverizing slag, cement, rock, &c. and of the type on which one or more rollers supported and revolved on arms or carriers mounted on a revolving snaft are pressed by centrifugal force against a grinding-ring, as described in Specification 117,281, the rollers 3, Figs. 1 and 3, are fixed to vertical spindles 5 carried in bearings 6 capable of moving radially and carried by the revolving pan bottom 1. The bearings 6 are mounted by trunnion supports 6<x> in brackets 7 on the underside of the pan bottom 1. The shafts 5 pass through openings 1<x> in the pan bottom, a sealed joint being formed by a collar 15 of rubber &c. on the shaft working on a plate 16 on the bottom 1 and having inner and outer baffle rings or collars 17, 18. A ring 5<x>, Fig. 5, upon the upper part of the shaft 5 lies over and outside the top of the bearing 6, and a collar 5<xx> at the lower end works on the bottom horizontal edge of the bearing 6. The oil reservoir 8 is placed on the inside of the bearing and the oil passes to the shaft 5 through ports 9 in the wall. Dust is prevented from passing between the stationary ring frame 4 and the pan bottom 1 by means of a ring 21 located in a recess in the bottom 1 overlying a ring 20 on the bottom of the frame 4. An upwardly projecting ring 23 on the table 1 works in an annular hood or channel 24 in the frame 4. Fan-blades 29 fixed on an extension 23<x> of the ring 23 work in the discharge channel 13 which receives the crushed material passing through the screen 28 and carry the material to the discharge spout 13<x>. The adjustable vanes 40 which throw the crushed material against the screen 28 are carried by studs 41 on the bottom 1. The vanes 40 may be spring pressed. In a modification, the the ring 23, Fig. 7, on the bottom 1 extends below as well as above it. The ring is inclined and its lower part extends into a channel 33 inside the wall 12<x> of the channel 13. Any dust reaching the ring passes down holes 34 into the channel 33, whence it is conducted by vanes 35 on the ring 23 to a delivery spout 36. Inclined vanes 37 on the inner wall of the channel 33 keep down any dust that rises above the vanes 35. Fig. 8 shows another arrangement for preventing the escape of dust from the interior of the pan. A rubber collar 15 is fastened by a clampring 15<x> on to the ring 18 round the hole 1<x> and the upper edge of the collar 15 works in contact with the under surface of the roller 3.
