Abstract
350,547. Gramophones. COLLARO, C., Culmore Works, Culmore Road, Peckham, and HENRY DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd., 28, Norfolk Street, Strand, both in London. March 13, 1930, No. 8189. [Class 40 (ii).] Driving.-A machine adapted for sound recording or reproducing is weight-driven through the intermediary of fusees to provide a constant linear velocity of the sound-record groove past the soundrecording or reproducing tool. The bed-plate 1 of the machine shown in elevation in Fig. 1 and in plan in Fig. 2, is provided with guides 2 for the carriage 3 on which is arranged a drum 4 mounted on a spindle 5. The fusees 36, 37 and a worm wheel 38 are mounted on the carriage on a spindle 39 carried in bearings in brackets 41, 41a, and are rotated with varying angular velocity by a wire rope 42 which passes over blocks 43, 44, to the latter of which is connected a weight 45, so that while the wire 42 is being unwound from the fusee 37 a wire 35 is wound from the drum 4 on to the fusee 36. On the spindle 5 is mounted a worm wheel 8 in engagement with a worm 15 on a spindle 16 provided with dog-clutch elements 17, 18 so that on rotation of the drum 4, as the wire 35 is unwound from it, a worm 20 is operated to rotate a centrifugal governor 25 and ensure constant angular velocity of the drum 4. The worm wheel 38 drives in one direction of rotation through gearing and dog-clutch elements 54, 55, the turntable spindle 63. The drive is transmitted through a helical wheel 60 engaging a collar 61 supported on a collar 62 rigidly connected with the spindle 63. The wheel 60 with its collar 61 is capable of limited rotary motion about the spindle 63, the driving connection comprising a spring steel strip 67 engaged between pins 68, 68a on the collar 61. On the spindle 47 of the worm 46 rotated by the worm wheel 38 is also arranged a worm 48 which drives a worm wheel 49 mounted on a sleeve 50 carried in a bearing member 51 rigidly connected with the saddle 3. The sleeve 50 has an internal screw thread engaging a lead screw 52 so that the carriage is caused to travel along the guides 2 in the bed-plate 1. A spur wheel 7 on the spindle 5 engages with a pinion 9 mounted on a spindle 10 which is provided with a removable handle 11 and ratchet 12 adapted to engage a spring pawl 13 so that the wire 35 may be rewound from the fusee 36 to the drum 4 prior to a subsequent recording or reproduction.
