Sound-boxes, mounting; speed regulating; tone-arm joints.-Relates to machines in which the linear speed of the record under the needle is maintained constant by means of a centrifugal governor driven by a wheel which is in frictional contact with the record and follows the movement of the sound box. According to the invention, the rolling wheel 1, Fig. 1, which makes contact with the record 16, is connected by a helical gear 3 to the spindle 4 of the governor 9; and these parts are carried by a box 10, which is hinged to the side of the sound-box 14, Fig. 6, and is pivoted to a swinging link 13 or slidably mounted on a radial rod 17, whereby it is maintained tangential to the record track while it follows the travel of the sound-box. The soundbox may itself be hinged to the tone-arm. In a modification, the box or frame carrying the governor is hinged about the connection between the sound-box and the tone-arm, and the roller is maintained substantially in radial alignment with the needle. The roller may be bevelled and disposed in an inclined position on the record. The worm wheel and the roller may be made in one. The tread of the roller on the record may then be provided by rubber blocks between the helical teeth, or by a rubber band wound round the rim of the roller between the teeth, or bv an endless band 11, Fig. 3, removed from the roller 1 bv guide pulleys 12 where the worm wheel engages the worm on the governor spindle 4.
