Abstract
349,646. Axle bearings. MATTHEWS, E. F., Elm Cottage, Watford Road, Wembley, Middlesex. March 3, 1931, No. 7009. [Class 12 (i).] In a one-piece axle-box having a closed, divided brass, the lower part 3 of the brass is supported and rotation of the brass is prevented by a member 7 fitted in a space or recess 15 in the box and abutting against the bottom of the part 3. The upper part 2 of the brass is secured against axial displacement by means of flanges 4 while axial displacement of the lower part 3 is prevented by projections 6 engaging in the upper part. The member 7 is adapted to be slid into the box and to be secured in position by a bolt 12 passing through a flange 10 and a rib 11 in the box. The part 3 has parallel sides 16, 17 fitting in the box and at a distance apart equal to the outer diameter of the part 2 between the flanges 4. The part 3 may be adjusted vertically by inserting packing strips above the member 7. The brass can therefore be inserted into the box and then raised into position, after which the member 7 is inserted. In a modification the part 3 has cylindrical sides fitting in the box, in which case the brass can be withdrawn, after removal of the member 7, by turning it through 180‹.
