Abstract
348,311. Indicating and locating faults; instrument casings; collectors; couplings. SCOTT, J. and SCLAR, I., Inglis Street, Dunfermline. March 27, 1930, No. 9833. [Classes 37 and 38 (i).] Portable apparatus for testing the insulation of cables, particularly the laid-up conductors of colliery cables, comprises pairs of spring-biassed roller contacts 9, 10 engaging the cable sheathing at opposite diameters, the conductors being connected to an induction coil 18 by a flexible single or multiple coupling 26 provided with a needle-point or other connection. A spark gap a, b is located between the roller contacts and induction coil, and so long as normal sparking occurs the insulation is good, cessation of or decrease in sparking indicating faulty insulation. The ends of the casing form cable guides, and a protective hood 3 is provided. Earthed brushes engage the cable sheathing at the cable guides for collecting surface charges thereon. The protective hood 3 may close the main plunger switch 20 when it is placed in position, or the roller-carrying arms may perform this function. The spark gap a, b is provided with an intermediate electrode to maintain its impedance constant, and is adjusted by a knob 33 which may be associated with a calibrated scale. An auxiliary gap 35 may be provided.
