Abstract

628,737. Attenuators. ADVANCE COMPONENTS, Ltd., and HATFIELD, R. H. Sept. 13, 1945, No. 23620. [Class 40 (viii)] An adjustable attenuator comprising series and shunt resistances is so constructed that it presents a constant impedance at ultra-high frequencies, the resistances and the cavities in which they lie being designed as sections of coaxial transmission-lines. An unbalanced ladder network is formed of series resistances 11 lying in a part-circular groove 10a and shunt resistances 12 lying in radial grooves 10b and connected to the casing 10 by screws 16. One pair of terminals comprises the casing and a conductor 14, and the other the casing and a conductor connected to a switch-arm 13, Fig. 3, the latter pair constituting a coaxial elbow coupling 23, Fig. 1. The switch-arm comprises a pair of springs, one of which is bent over at 13a, Fig. 3, to engage the domed heads of conducting rods 18 embedded in insulation 19, such as polystyrene, and leading to the junctions of the resistances 11, 12. The other spring carries a dome 25 of insulating material which sticks into indexing recesses 24 containing plugs of oiled felt for lubrication. The cover-plate 17 is divided along a diameter to check errors due to eddy currents at the setting for maximum attenuation.
