Abstract

347,553. Starting. HANNOVERSCHE MASCHINENBAU-AKT.-GES., VORM. G. EGESTORFF (HANOMAG), Linden, and SCHARGORODSKY, L., 13, Sonnenweg, both in Hanover, Germany. July 18, 1930, No. 21833. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1929. [Class 7 (v).] In a Diesel or other engine which is started without compression, and in which the exhaust valve is subsequently brought automatically into normal operation by means of a pin 3 in engagement with a screwthread 2 or a spiral groove in an engine-driven member, the pin 3 is coupled in such a manner with a rotatable toothed segment 6 or like member operated by the pin, that the planes of oscillation of the pin and the segment 6 are at right-angles, a spring 10 being provided to effect the return movement of the pin. As shown, the pin 3 is carried by a lever 4 pivoted on the segment 6 and acted upon by the torsion spring 10 on the pivot. The segment 6 is rotatable on a shaft 5 at rightangles to the pivot of the lever 4, and engages a pinion 7 carrying a lever 8 connected by a rod 9 to means for operating the exhaust valves. At starting, the segment 6 is moved about the shaft 5 to bring the pin 3 into engagement with the lowest portion of the conical screw 2, by means of a crank handle on the shaft of the pinion 7, and the rod 9 effects opening of the exhaust valves. Upon rotation of the shaft 1, the screw 2 moves the pin 3 outwards from the shaft, turning the segment 6 and bringing the exhaust valves gradually into normal operation. When the pin 3 leaves the screw 2, the spring 10 moves the lever 4 and pin 3 axially of the shaft 1 into the initial position, adjacent to but out of engagement with the lowest portion of the conical screw. The conical screw 2 may be replaced by a plate having a spiral groove, the last turn of which is above the surface of the plate.
