Abstract

347,285. Liquid expansion engines. CARTER, H. P., Kennet Hall, Newmarket, Cambridgeshire. Jan. 27, 1930, No. 2793. [Class 10.] Heat is supplied at a controllable rate to the working liquid via an intermediate medium. In the example illustrated, liquid carbon dioxide is the working liquid and is passed into the tube 1 through a container 2 in which water, heated by the furnace 6, is circulated by pipes 3, 4, and a pump 5. A reservoir for excess of hot water is supplied by pipes 9, 10 and a pump 12, and is connected to the container 2 by a pipe 17. Suitable valves 13 .. 16 and 18 are provided for controlling the hot water flow and so controlling the heating of the working fluid in the pipe 1. If a degree of heat greater than that of boiling water is desired, a second chamber 28 full of hot gas is provided. A thermostat 8, safety valve 20 and overflow tank 23 are also provided to assist in controlling the temperature.
