Abstract

347,270. Tension arrangements for thread, wire, and like winding machines. GEDDES, J. W., Katu, Bodley Road, New Malden, Surrey. Jan. 25, 1930, No. 2654. [Class 120 (ii).] A tension device for winding threads, wires, &c., on reels, frames, &c., particularly for electric coils of fine guage wire &c. comprises a horizontally pivoted lever d, f, the longer arm d carrying a pulley e over which the wire &c. c passes, the other arm f supporting a weight W suspended at the end of a spring h. The spring h is of such length that variations of tension due to extensions during working are negligible. Preferably oscillation of the weight W is damped by a washer i of felt &c. held between discs i<1> and working in a loosely fitting dashpot j. The point of suspension of the weight W &c. is above the line joining the centre of the pulley e and the fulcrum d<1> to compensate for the variation of pull on the pulley e due to changes in the angles the wire makes with the pulley. In an example, for winding wires between 75, 80 mils a spring 13 inches long, extending to 25 inches under the tension due to the weight, which is 90 ounces, is used.
