Clearing-apparatus; stop-motions; tensionarrangements.-A machine for winding yarn or thread is provided with spindles 16, Figs. 1 and 2, of the kind described in Specifications 2335/10 and 196,498 comprising a blade 21, a wharl 17 flanged at 18 to receive a flannel washer 19, and a collar 20 supported thereon and movable lengthwise of the blade 21, and with a stop-lever 31 for stopping the said spindles on the passage of slubs or like thick places in the yarn being wound. The flange or collar 20 is provided with a resilient clip 32 having a projection 30, and the lever 31, formed with arms 33, 35 and pivoted on a support 34, is adapted to be actuated by a lever 37 pivoted at 38 and provided with a spike 40 which projects into a groove 41 in a guide pulley 27 round which the yarn 24 passes from the supply bobbin 23. The contacting faces of the projection 30 and the arm 33 are made slightly oblique to tend to raise the collar 20 from the wharl 17, while the lever 31 is provided with an adjustable stop 36 whereby the lever 37 holds the arm 33 clear of the projection 30. A stop 48 is provided on the support 34 to limit the movement of the lever 37. A weight 49, supported by a spring 50, is attached to the arm 37 the spring 50 affording suitable resistance to movement without adding to the inertia of the spike 40 and lever 37. The spike 40 and pulley 27 are so set relatively that any slub in the yarn is caught on the spike 40 whereby the lever 37 is moved and the arm 33 of the lever 31 contacts with the projection 30 to stop the spindle 16, yarn not exceeding the intended thickness passing clear of the spike 40. The groove 41 is of V- shape whereby soft thick places are pressed together laterally and are prevented from becoming flattened. In a modification, a spring 51, Fig. 3. engages with the arm 33 to hold the stop lever 31 against the lever 37 when in engagement therewith, and against a stop 54, as shown in Fig. 5 when released therefrom, while the spring 50 is connected to a rod 56 which may be weighted or fixed by a screw 58 in the support 57 to apply any desired tension to the, said spring. The pulley 27 is mounted in a resilient extension 59 of the support 57, a. screw 63 having fine and coarse threads 62, 65, being provided to give a fine adjustment of the pulley 27 relative to the spike 40. In further modifications, two or more spikes 40 may be used or the spike 40 may be replaced by a wheel 70, Fig. 7, having saw-like ratchet or other teeth 71, while the spike or wheel may co-operate with a grooved pulley 27 or with a grooved block 72, Fig. 11. A tension device 26 comprising discs 87, 88 between which the yarn passes is provided, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
