Abstract

346,954. Moulding and vulcanizing rubber. LONG, E. S., 87, Grange Road, Bermondsey, London. March 20, 1930, No. 9005. [Classes 70 and 87 (ii).] Annular articles, such as protector sleeves for drill pipes &c. for oil wells, are made by enclosing in a vulcanizing mould a mass of rubber of the same volume as that of the article, and pressing in a plunger to form the central aperture, and displace the rubber to fill the mould. A rubber biscuit 1a, Fig. 2, is placed in a mould consisting of a cylinder 5, bottom plate 7, and apertured bush 8, through which passes a core 9. The whole is heated, e.g. to 300‹ F., and placed in a press, Fig. 3, in which the core 9 is forced down, and the rubber is displaced laterally to fill the mould, and form the sleeve 1b. After vulcanization the mould is removed from the press, and inverted, and the sleeve is forced out by pressure on the plate 7.
