Abstract

408,372. Hydraulic presses. EATON, M. M., 18, Brearley Street, Birmingham. Nov. 15, 1932, No. 32228. [Class 69 (ii).] An hydraulic press comprises a central member 1, Figs. 1, 8, carrying an annular piston 5 enclosed by a concentric cylinder 6, the piston and cylinder being relatively movable ; further, the member 1, which may be tubular, carries one or more platens such as 4 which co-operate with one or more external platens such as 10 carried by the cylinder. Either the piston or the cylinder may be movable ; in the form shown in Fig. 1, the cylinder rises under the influence of hydraulic pressure admitted at 13, and falls under gravity or by spring-action. Further, the lower end of the cylinder may be closed, movement of the press in either direction being effected by placing the space above or below the piston to pressure or exhaust. The piston and the closed end or ends of the cylinder serve as guides for the central member. By placing platens upon the base-member 2 and the underside of the cylinder, the press may accordingly be made double-acting. The platens may be of annular formation ; in addition, or as an alternative, the platens may be in the form of straight transversely-disposed plates 21, 22, Fig. 8, arranged in a gap 20 in the central member 1. When annular platens are employed, the moulds may be arranged in radial compartments ; both moulds and platens may be heated.
