Abstract
654,455. Moulding-presses. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and HARRISON, W. June 1, 1948, No. 14799. [Class 87 (ii)] In a press for moulding insulating or other material including a vertically-moving head, top table or like press part 2 which co-operates with a fixed bottom plate 1 to mould an article, the article being subjected also to horizontal pressure by means which move one or more side clamps 4 towards the article, movement of the head 1 aids the said means. As shown, the means that operate the clamps comprise toggles having links 8, 7, the link 7 being pivoted on a fixed support 10. The joint 9 of each toggle is connected to the piston rod 12 of a hydraulic cylinder 11 in which a constant pressure exists, the cylinder 11 tending to pull down the joint from the position shown to straighten the toggle and apply inward pressure to the article. The head 1 is hydraulically operated, and aids the cylinders 11, to provide an additional thrust on the joint 9, by means of link 15 connected to a cylinder 14 in which a constant hydraulic pressure is maintained from a supply source through pipes 14b. The piston 17 of cylinder 14 has a rod 16 which extends through a hole in head 2. Around the rod is a distance piece 18, and a crossbar 19 fixed to head 2 bears on the distance piece. When the head descends a thrust is transmitted through distance piece and piston to the joint 9, thus supplementing the thrust given by cylinder 11. When the head rises the crossbar 19 abuts nuts &c. 20 on rod 16 to break the toggle. In a modification (not illustrated) the cylinders 14 and rams 17 are replaced by springs.
