[Class 138 (ii).] A flat-iron when not in use is supported out of contact with the work by means of a stump 4 shaped as shown and pivoted to the rear of the iron and urged by springs 6 in a counterclockwise direction to the position shown. When it is desired to use the iron the latter is depressed on to the work, causing the stirrup to rotate clockwise, its front end rising over the nose of the iron. A crank shaft 9 is rotatably mounted in the supports 3 of the handle and when rotated causes a crank pin 10 to engage under the front of the stirrup to raise it still farther and to lock it in such raised position. The movement of the crank pin to full dead-centre position is limited by the engagement of the crank handle 9 with the handle 2 of the iron. On release of the handle 2 the springs 6 return the crank pin and shaft to unlocking position and swing the stirrup about its pivots to raise the iron off the work.
