Abstract
Threads, yarns, filaments, fibres, fabrics, or garments of material of artificial origin consisting of or containing cellulose or cellulose derivatives such as cellulose acetate or other esters or ethers of cellulose are improved by treatment with rubber latex. The tendency of fabrics to slip, ladder, or run is diminished by the treatment. The rubber latex, alone or in colloidal solution or suspension with insoluble white or coloured pigments or with vat dyes to which may be added graphite, may be applied over the whole surface or in parts by the application of a thickened paste by stencilling, printing, &c., the material being, in some cases, previously treated with a swelling agent to facilitate the absorption of the dressing. The rubber latex may be applied together with vulcanizing agents. Examples of insoluble substances for applying with the latex dispersion are zinc oxide, red lead, aluminium hydroxide, barium sulphate, zinc sulphide, calcium phosphate, vermilion, Prussian blue, graphite, Anthrene jade green (colour index No. 1101), and Ponsol Blue 3G. In some cases, and particularly when it is desired to reduce the lustre, the material is treated with an insoluble substance before the latex treatment. For example, barium sulphate may be deposited on the material by treatment with a soluble sulphate a material which has been impregnated with barium thiocyanate. A dull black finish may be obtained on fibres of organic derivatives of cellulose by dyeing the material black and then delustring by the method described above. The material may be dyed before or after the treatment with the rubber latex, and in the case of material to be dyed in the presence of an acid, such dyeing should always precede the latex treatment. In examples, a fabric of cellulose acetate yarn is treated with a bath containing rubber latex and ammonium thiocyanate; a similar fabric is treated in a bath containing also an aqueous dispersion of graphite; and a satin fabric composed of acetone-soluble cellulose acetate is treated in a bath containing latex and zinc oxide. Specifications 296,450 and 296,451, [both in Class 140, Waterproof &c. fabrics], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the application of the treatment to artificial material other than that referred to above, and also to material of animal and vegetable origin. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
