Abstract
346,358. Ironing presses. PROSPERITY CO., Inc., Beattie Street, Syracuse, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Davis, E. ; 324, Roosevelt Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 3, 1929, No. 30048. Convention date, Jan. 4. [Class 138 (ii).] The press head is brought into light contact with the buck when a source of low pressure fluid is brought into communication with the cylinder containing the piston which is connected to the press operating linkage, and an adjustable heavy pressure is applied between the press members by placing the cylinder in communication with a source of high pressure fluid. The low pressure fluid supply pipe 22, Fig. 2, communicates with a valve casing 21 through a normally closed inlet valve 23. The casing 21 is provided with a pipe 26 leading to the cylinder 9 and with a normally open exhaust valve 24 on a common stem 25 with the inlet valve 23. The valve 23 is opened by depressing a button 35 which acts on a lever 36 which in turn acts on a lever 39 mounted on a rockshaft 38 and acting on the valve stem 41. The button must be maintained depressed until after the piston 10 has passed a port 56 in the cylinder 9 whereupon fluid pressure acts on a diaphragm 50 to maintain, through a pin 51 and the lever 39, the exhaust valve 24 closed and the inlet valve 23 open. The high pressure pipe 30, Fig. 3, communicates with a valve casing 29 and is provided with a normally closed inlet valve 31 and a normally open exhaust valve 32. The casings 29, 21 connect through a pipe 45 containing a check valve 47 which checks the access of high pressure fluid to the piston 10 whilst the press is closing. The valve 31 is opened and valve 32 closed by the depression of the button 35, the arm 40 actuating the valve stem 42 being mounted on the same rock shaft 38 as the lever 39. The pressure is relieved by raising a lever 60, Fig. 2, to open a normally closed exhaust valve 57. To provide for the occupation of both hands of the operator during press closing an auxiliary exhaust valve 65 must be maintained closed by depressing a button 61 until after the piston has passed the port 56 whereupo the valve 65 is maintained closed through the diaphragm 69, pin 70 and lever 63. Additionally the initial closing of the press may be effected mechanically by the operator by depression of a treadle connected to the press head lever.
