[Class 138 (ii)] A machine for pressing tubular articles in one lay comprises an element 1, having a plurality of pressing faces, on which the article is sleeved and expansible means 4 to compensate for different diameters of articles and which are yieldingly deformable towards a flattened form to conform to pressing members 2, 3 which are operable to co-operate with the element 1 and with the expansible means 4. As shown in Fig. 2, a buck 1 is supported at one end on a table by means of a bracket 14, its upper surface being engaged by a pressing head 2 attached to a swinging arm 17 and its lower surface by a pressing member 3 which is mounted on a vertically movable piston. The buck 1 comprises a hollow oval-shaped body internally heated and with expansible resilient tubes 4 on one or both of its longitudinal edges as shown in Fig. 6. The body and tubes are enclosed in a padded cover 5 which holds the tubes in place. The pressing members 2, 3 are internally heated and have extended flanges 9, 10 which flatten the tubes 4 during the pressing operation as shown in Fig. 7 and so press the entire surface of the article in one operation. The tubes 4 are made pervious or provided with a relief valve or both to permit air which is provided by an electrically driven fan 21, Fig. 3, to escape during this operation. The buck body may be modified so that the faces are substantially parallel ; if used for shirts it may have cut-outs to accommodate the sleeves and another modification permits both sleeves of a shirt to be ironed at once by providing the buck with two arms each with an expansible pipe along its outside edge. The movable pressing members are suitably shaped in each case. When used for sleeves a cuff clamp 24, operated by a piston 33, is provided. In use the garment is sleeved over the buck and expanded by depressing a pedal 35, Fig. 3. This closes an exhaust valve 36 and opens a compressed air supply valve 38 which by operating piston 33 lowers the cuff clamp on to the garment. In its travel the piston 33 uncovers a part 45, and air can then operate diaphram 47, which by a link 48 opens a valve 49 in the air supply pipe to the buck 1 and so permits the fan 21 to expand the garment. The press is then closed by a two-hand system comprising two push buttons 50, 51, Fig. 3. Depressing both buttons opens compressed air supply valves 54, 55 which are series connected and closes exhaust. valves 52 and 53. The air raises piston 27, so lowering the head 2 and in its travel the piston uncovers a port 60 which permits the air to operate diaphragms 72, 73 which lock the valves 54, 55 open and the valves 52, 53 closed and also operates a diaphragm 63 which opens a compressed air supply valve 66 and closes an exhaust valve 65. The lower pressing member is consequently raised into contact with the buck. When the garment has been sufficiently pressed the pedal 35 is released which permits the cuff clamp to move and cuts off the air supply to the garment from the fan 21. The press is opened by operating either one of two levers 85, 86, which releases the air pressure on the diaphragms 63, 71, 72, permitting the valves 52 . . . 55 and 65, 66 to return under spring pressure to their initial positions, so releasing pistons 27, 30 which open the press. The pressing elements and the cuff clamp return to their initial position under spring pressure.
