Steam and other fluid-pressure presses.- In a garment press which is closed and maintained closed by fluid pressure and opened by a spring on release of the fluid pressure, both hands of the operator must be used to operate the controlling means for closing the press and must continue to be used until the press is closed completelv. A normally closed pressure inlet valve 15 is arranged on the same spindle 17 as an exhaust valve 23 which communicates with atmosphere, being normally open but being closed by a hand lever 32. The valve chest communicates through a pipe 19 with a cylinder 6 in which a piston 8 works, the descending movement of the piston closing the press. An extension of the pipe 19 communicates with a second normally open exhaust valve 14a which must be closed bv a hand lever 29 before the press can be closed. A restricted passage 38 places diaphragm chambers 44, 45 under pressure as soon as the piston has passed the orifice of the passage 38, and the diaphragms co-operate with plungers 46, 47 acting on the levers 32, 29 to maintain the exhaust valves and the press closed. Opening of the press is effected by releasing either of the levers 32, 29 or by releasing an auxiliary lever 50 opens a third exhaust valve 48. A pair of presses may be operated by a single operator simultaneously and in opposite phases by having the controls juxtaposed so that simultaneously with operating one pair of levers to close one press, one of the auxiliary levers may be operated to open the other press.
