Abstract
344,871. Screw propellers. HOLM. STRÍM, A., 14, Rue Bel Respiro, Monte Carlo, Monaco. Oct. 11, 1929, No. 30884. [Class 114.] A screw propeller having a streamline boss has its blades projecting therefrom at the greatest diameter which is at least <1>/3 of the diameter of the complete propeller. The streamline boss is constituted by a forward nose portion c, intermediate portion b and an after portion d. The after portion is stationary and supported from a depending casing, whilst the forward portion is adapted to be rotated by gears and carries the blades e. Around the blades may be fixed a ring or casing f the section of which is of hydrofoil shape. The blades of the propeller may be formed of overlapping plates h either hollow or laminated but so arranged as to provide a ribbed or scale-like exterior surface. In the case of hollow blades communication may be made between the inside and outside by means of small holes i. In a modification the encircling casing f instead of being fixed to the blades is fixed to the vessel or adjustably mounted thereon to provide a steering effect. Also the after part of the boss may be formed with recesses and inner vanes adapted to lead the fluid forwardly through the boss and eject it from openings into the path of the fluid passing through the main blades.
