[Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v).] To translate unmodulated carrier-wave signals into low-frequency signals, a voltage drop due to rectified high-frequency currents is applied to excite a glow lamp S in series with a valve V into lowfrequency oscillations or discharges. A telephone T or its equivalent is in series with the glow lamp to render the low-frequency oscillations audible. A potential for the glow lamp just below the extinguishing valve is obtained from a potentiometer P across the high-tension battery B, a condenser K is shunted across the glow lamp, and a resistance W is connected in series with the high-tension battery in the anode circuit of the valve. The light from the glow lamp may be used for recording, for example in copying-telegraphy.
