[Class 40 (ii).] An automatic stop for gramophones and the like comprises lever members 9, 10 actuated by the traversing movement of the tone arm, and a member 16 which is adapted d intermittently to cause separation of the levers during the playing of a record and also to effect a greater separation of such levers, resulting in the application of brake mechanism, upon an increase taking place in the rate of movement of the tone arm. The levers 9, 10 are pivoted together at 12<1>, and are capable of movement about a fixed pivot 13, the lever 9 having only a loose connection at such pivot. A spring 12 acts to maintain the levers in engagement with a depending pin 11 on the tone arm so that the levers move with the tone arm about the pivot 13. The lower end of the lever 10 is provided with a serrated surface 17 engaged by a projection 18 on a spring-controlled detent lever 16. A cam member 20 rotating with the turntable spindle engages a projection 21 on the detent lever 16 so as to cause the latter to reciprocate about its pivot and intermittently disengage the projection 18 from the surface 17. The lever 10 will be separated from the lever 9 during each period of engagement of the lever 16 and surface 17, and will follow up the lever 9 under the action of the spring 12 during the disengaged periods. At the end of playing a record, the lever 9 receives an increased movement from the tone arm and, since the lever 10 is restrained by the lever 16 from movement, the lever 9 moves about the pivot 121 so that a projection 14 on such lever engages an arcuate surface 15 on a brake-releasing lever 3 which thereupon allows a spring-controlled brake lever 2 to move to stopping position. Normally the brake lever 2 is held in the " off " position by the engagement in a notch 4 in the lever 3 of a projection 5 on the brake lever 2. An arcuate surface 23 on the 'lever 16 terminates in a cam 24 which is engaged by the end of the brake lever 2 when the brake is applied so as to release the lever 10 from engagement with the lever 16. During resetting of the brake, a surface 25 on the lever 10 engages the lower end of the brake lever 2 until the projection 5 engages the notch 4 in the lever 3, Instead of a serrated surface 17 on the lever 10, there may be provided a wedge-shaped contacting surface on the detent lever and a groove on the lever 10, or a pad of rubber &c. may be provided on one member and a roughened or serrated surface on the other. The projection 14 on the lever 10 may be adjustable.
