Application filed. August 21, 1917, Serial "No. 187,892. Renewed May 22 1920. Serial No. 383,544.
To all whom may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARCHIE PARNAPL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of of a record to release thebrake mechanismv Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements lIl specification.
This invention pertains to an automatically operated stop for talking machlnes and similar devices, in whicha spring controlled brake mechanism is adapted to be held in an adjusted 'positionreleasablyen gaging a spring controlledlever which is adapted to be actuated by the soundarm'of' a reproducer mechanism after the playing to permit the same to automatically engage the record carrying disk to bring the same to a stop.
Itis an obiect of this invention. to provide a device for phonographs serving to automatically bring theoperating mechanismsto .a stop after the playing of arecord. so
Another object of this invention is the construction of a spring controlled mechanism adapted to be automatically actuated by the sounding armof a phonograph to bring a. recordcarrying disk toa standstill after'the playing of a. record. It is furthermore an ob 'ect mechanism of a talking machine to release spring controlled levers to permit a brake on one of said levers to frictionally engage the record carrying disk to bring the same to a stop at any desired point in the playing of a record.
An important object of the invention is the construction of a talking machinestop wherein a brake is adapted to be manually set in a position from which the same is automatically released from engagement with a spring controlled lockinglever a. controlling arm which is adapted to be 'contacted by'the pivoted sounding arm ofthe.
reproducer mechanism of theutalking machine to cause the brake to frictionally engage the record'ca'rrying disk of the talkof this inven- Y tion to provide a pivotally 'mounted'arn adapted to be actuated by the reproducer' Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J ly 6; 1920 7 ing machine to bring the same to a: stop at d the desired set position. I I
Other and further important objectsof the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and drawings.
The invention (in a preferred form) "is llustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure l is a top plan view ofa talking machine equipped with a. stop mechanism embodylng the principles of this invention. F g. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view similar to that shown in F ig.'1, with the pperation ofthe device indicated byldotted mes.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectionalview taken on line 33, of Fig. 2,with parts omitted.
Fig. 4 is an enlargedtop plan view of the V i V I i l l l Fig. 51s an elevational view ofone side device.
thereof.

4, with parts broken :away.
. Fig. 7,;is a section taken on line .7-7 of Fig. 4, w th parts shown in elevation. and
with parts broken away;
As shown on the drawings: The reference numeral 1, indicates the top board of a talking machine casing upon which is rotatably'mounted a record carrying disk, 2, having. a record 3, disposed thereon in a customary manner to rotate therewith. Mounted'near. one side of the top board 1, and extending upwardlytherefrom is aestub pipe or tube" 4, havingpivotally mounted thereon an elbow 5, in the end of which is secured a reproducer sounding arm 6. Secured in the outer end of, the sounding arm 6, is a sound box 7, of any desired type adapted to carryinga record playing needle,
for playingfthe record when the same is, ro-
tatedwith' the record carrying disk. 1
Securely mounted by means of screws 8,
or other suitable means upon the top board.
1, to the outside of the disk.2,'and to one side of the reproducer supporting pipe 4, is a base plate v9, having pivotally mounted near one side thereof by, means ofa pivot pin 10', a stop arm or lever. 11 theouter end of which is curved outwardly and has securedthereon a knurled head orhandle .12.
Integrally, formed or rigidly secured: on
the inner edge of the stop arm 1l,'nearthe curvedendthereo'f is an upwardly directed the pivot pin 10, an abutment 17, issecured uponthe base plate 9, in a 13081131011 to be contacted by the inner edge of the extension projection or finger 13, around whichis disposed a brake shoe 14, made of rubber or Integrally angles to form a hook or latch 16. To limit the outward swing of the stop arinll, about arm 1'5. Mounted upon the base plate 9, to
'.t1ierear oi the stop arm 11, is a leaf spring 18, which has the middle portion thereof engaged around a retaining screw 19.. f One ar'm ofsaid spring 1 8, is engaged behind a nub or PIOJGCiLlOH 20, formed on the inner edge of the base plate 9, while the other arm of said spring engages a'nub or pro ection :21, secured onthe inner edge ofthestjop arm 11', thus affording a means for normally pull ing the stop arm inwardly to permit the riphery of the record carrying disk 2, as
shown in dottedlines in Fig. 2. Of course it will be understood that any suitable type i of spring or other means maybe used to exert a pull on the outer end ofthe stop arm to normally permitthebrake'shoe to co tact the disk 2;
"base plate 9, adjacent the reproducer stub pipe 4, is a vertical shaft-32, to which is rig- Pivotally mounted at one corner of the idly secured bymeans of a clamp 01' bracket 23', angled arm or lever 24, oneangled 40; 1 i
' 1 23, while the other end is slightly curvedand bentupwardly adjacent and to one side of en'd'of Which is secured the clamp bracket th evsounding armf6,'to permit said-sounding arm to contact the same after the playing 6 of a record to actuate the brake mechanism "as hereinafter described. Rigidly engaged on the lower end of the vertical shaft-22, and
above the'base plate 9, is a'finger or lever 25,
7 ofl'set at a point between the ends thereof to permit'theother or free end of the finger to laterally crossover the extension arm 15, of
when t'he stop arm 11, is in its outer posia. spring27, is looped around the vertical shaft 22, and has one end thereof secured to the edge of the base plate 9, and the other end thereof engaged around the'inner' edge the a latch 16.
When it is desired to set the stop mechanismof a tal-lrin g" machine so that the stop will act automatically after the playing of I record or at any point on the record, the playing needle secured 1n the reproducer stylusmounted on the ended? the sounding arm 6, is first set with the'needle 1n the last or innermost groovein the record 3, or at any otherfdesired point on thejrefcord at .5
which it is desired to bring the record carryingdisk 2, to a standstill; .The actuating lever24,isthen manuallytinoved"into a position wherein the curved angie'd free end of said le 'er' abuts ,or contacts oneiside of the sounding arm'6. In this adjusted or set position of thefstop mechanism the latch 16, of the stoparin 11, seats in the notch'26, of the finger25,thereby holding the stop arm in its outermost position as shown infi'ull lines in Fig.4, against the action of the fspring 18, which is stressed. The spring 27,
secured to the base plate 9, and'to the finger 25,' tends ,to hold. the finger' 25, forced brake shoe 14, to frictionally engage thepeagainst the latch 16, "thereby locking the stop Imec'hanismin" aset or adjusted posi- 2', and the record 3,;to permit the needle to play said record ilvlierebythe reproducer {arm moves inwardly with respect to the record until the sounding arm 6, contactsthe anglecl upwardly projeotingfi'ree end of the stop actuating leverj24, wliic'h isijthereby swung with the, shaft 22,; against the stress of the controlling spring 27 ,thus simultaneously swingin 'th'e finger '25, away from The action of the'stressed spring 18, is thus eXerted to pull'the stop arm 11, in'wardly thereby forcing, the brake shoe 1'4,a'gainst theperiphery of the record carrying disk The friction between said I p I rbrake' shoe and disk brings the disk to a the stop arm, .to permit the latch 16,0f said extension arm to lockin'gly seat in a notch" 26', formed in the outer edge of the finger 25,
stopwithina very short time atthe'desired set position of the stop actuatinglever 24.
, If at any time it is desired to bring the record carrying disk and; record "to a stop' ata point other than at the endof the rec ord, the {clamp 28, which supports the lever 24, on jthe shaft 22 may beturned on the ti'onf The reproducer arm is new. swung 10C ca'usingrotation ofthe recordcarrying disk sh'aft"2 2, into a position in'wh'ich the latch '16, engages inithelnotch 26, of the finger 25,
I and in: which the'free. end of the lactuating le'ver24, i'sf positionedat the desired point to be contacted bythe soundingarm6, of the reproducer mechanism. j
It will of course be understood that the springs 18 and 27, may be of any desired type and that numerous other details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I thereforedo not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my 'inventioni A talking machine mechanism embracing a base plate, an arm pivoted thereon, a latch and a brake shoevon said arm on opposite sides of the pivot point of said arm, a spring on said base plate connected with said arm for normally holding the same in braking position, a shaft pivoted on said base plate, a clamping bracket engaged on said shaft,
an actuating lever secured therein, a mem-- ber secured to said shaft, and a spring e11- gaging around said shaft and attached to said base plate and to said member, said whereby said brake shoe is held'in a retracted position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my'name' in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
