common use of the graphophone or phonograph there have been proposed a number of devices designed for the automatic stopping of the machine at the end of the re production of a record. Many of the above class of stop devices have been impracticable owing to the fact that they are not adapted to discontinue the operation of the machine when different sizes of. records are employed; other of such devices overcome the diificulty but thougheapable of discontinuing the reproduction irrespective of the size of the record the instrumentalities utilized have been so complicated and so ill adapted so far as applicability to machines in use is concerned as not to come into general use.
My present invention represents improvements in automatic stop devices and comprises a mechanism composed of very few parts and capable of being attached to ordinary types of disk machines to apply abrake to the turn table of the machine and thereby stop the same from rotation, when the needle of the reproducer reaches the end of the reproducing groove of the record.
My mechanism is especially desirable be cause of its facility of adjustment whereby to stop the machine at the end of the reproduction from the record irrespective of the size of the latter.
The present improvements further are especially advantageous for reasons other than those involving the simplicity and eliiciency of the mechanism, as will be readily comprehended on review of the following detail description, in connection with the appended drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an ordinary grupl'iophone showing the turn table and record thereon broken away, and the reproducer arm in dotted lines, the invention being applied with the parts adjusted as when starting the reproduction of the record. Fig. 4c is a fragmentary view in elevation and with the turn table and record in section, bringing out more clearly the relative arrangement of the parts. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are fragmentary views, primarily in plan, illustrating different positions of parts of a modified embodiment of the invention.
In the utilization of my invention no change whatever in the construction of the ordinary disk graphophone is proposed, the parts of the automatic stopping mechanism being susceptible of application to any machine of the above mentioned general type.
Describing the invention specifically and referring to- Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, A denotes a base plate secured to the top B of the ing of the machine by means of screws or the like. On the plate A is pivoted a starting lever l the axis of which is denoted at 2. This lever 1 is also a brake lever practically speaking because it has a small brake shoe 3 capable of engaging the inner side of the rim of the turn table C, the latter being of the usual rotary type. A coiled spring 4 connects the lever 1 with a lug 5 formed on the plate A and lever 1 has a handle 6 proj ecting some distance from the periphery of the table C for ready manipulation. .On an axis 7 on the plate A is pivoted a release lever 8, the outer end of which is provided with an upwardly extending lug 9 and the intermediate portion of which has a crooked slot 8 formed therein. The movement of the lever 8 in one direction is limited by a lug 1.0 on the plate A. Removably applied to the pivoted end portion of the pivoted reproducer arm D for rotation therewith is a collar 11 formed with an annular groove in which is received the body portion of an adjustable member 12. The member 12 is preferably made from a length of wire or similar materialand formed with a somewhat circular body sprung about the collar 11 and frictionally engaging the collar so that when adjusted rotatably on the latter the engagement will. be such. as to position the member 12 against unauthorized moveation with the lever 8 and is formed with a trip arm 13 and a finger piece 14, the same The member 12 is a trip for co6perbeing opposite hent terminals of tee hody of the member. l/Vith the above construc tion in view the action of the stopping mechanism is as follows: Assuming a new record is placed on the talole C the reproducer arm will he moved until the stylus l5 of the reproducer F is momentarily positioned at the innermost portion or? the reproducing track or groove of the record E, as approximately shown in Fig. 2. the same time the operator grasps the finger piece it and quickly adjusts the trip memher l2 sothat its arm 13 engages the lug 9 of the lever 8. The handle 6 of the lever l is then pressed in the direction oi? the full line arrow in Fig. 3 whereupon a detent or projection l on the inner end of the lever 1' slides along the inclined surface a of the slot 8 and moves the lever 8 to the position shown in 3. The lever 1 is then released and the spring l immediately tends to pull the lever toward its original position therehy engaging the detent 1* with the lever 8 in the manner shown in Fig. 1, holding the brake shoe 3 out of engagement with respect to the table C and permitting the table to continue to turn, it having been started by the movement of the lever l to the position illustrated in 3. fhe operator will ordinarily promptly position the reproducer arm with the stylus l5 engaging the starting point or outermost portion of the reproducing groove of the record it, just previous to the initial starting pressure exerted on the lever]: so that when the table C starts to move the reproduction of the record will begin. When the stylus 15 reaches the inner terminal of the recording groove of the record at which it was momentarily originally positioned in order to get the desired adjustment of the trip arm 13, the arm 13 will strike the projection 9 of the lever 8, thereby forcing said lever into engagement with the lug l0 and permitting the detent l under the action of the spring l on the lever 1 to move into the outermost portion of the slot 8 The movement oil the lever l in this operation again engages its brake shoe 3 with the table 6 and immediately stops the turn table G at a time substantially synchronous in respect to the time when the needle 15 reaches the inner terminus ot' the reproducing record groove. To start the machine again merely requires a pressure of the lever l outward in respect to the table G whereupon the operation de scribed will be repeated. The said outward movement of the'lever 1 is limited by the shoulder y at the innermost end of the slot 8 of lever 8.

To apply the invention to a graphophone it is only necessary to secure the plate and the parts carried thereby to the of the casing of the machine, place in position the collar ll on the reproducing a m and adjust the trip member 12 in the ner described. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. lln combination, a turn table, a swi ing arm, stop mechanism comprising a sta ing lever, brake means intermediate lever and the turn table, a release lever a ranged to he moved by the starting l into a position for holding the starting lever in a position rendering said brake means ini operative, and trip means on the swinging arm adjustable in relation to and adapted to impinge the release lever, whereby lease the starting lever and permit application of the brake means to the turn 9 ln combination, a turn table, a movabl I- arm, stop mechanism comprising a starting lever, brake means intermediate said lever and the turn table, a release lever for holding the starting lever in a position render said brake means inoperative and adao r to be actuated by movement of the starting lever in one direction, and trip means on the swinging arm adjustable in relation to and adapted to impinge the release lever, wher by to release the starting lever and per application of the brake means to the t table, said trip means comprising a me rotatable in a horizontal plane on the able ,lug operating in said slot to impinge said inclined wall and thus move the release lever into a position locking the starting lever in a position permitting the operationof the turn table.
4. In combination, a turn table, a movable arm, stop mechanism comprising a starting lever, brake means intermediate said lever and the turn table, a release lever for holding'the starting lever in a position rendering said brake means inoperative, and trip means on the arm adjustable in relation to and adapted to impinge the release lever, whereby to release the starting lever and permit application of the brake means to the turn table, the release lever having a slot, a wall of which is inclined, and the starting lever being formed with a lug operating in said slot to impinge said inclined wall and thus move the release lever into a position locking the starting lever in a position permitting the operation of the turn table, the trip means aforesaid comprising a part removably applied to the movable arm and a trip member adjustable on said part, the release lever having a lug in' the path of movement of said trip member.
5. In combination, a turn table, a swinging arm, stop mechanism consisting of a starting lever, brake means intermediate said lever and the table to prevent operation of the latter, means tending normally to cause cooperation of the brake means with the table, a release lever having means to hold the starting lever in a position acting against the last mentioned means whereby to permit operation of the table and operable by the starting lever to predeterminately set the release lever in operative position, and adjustable means intermediate said release lever and the swinging arm to effect movement of the release lever at'a predetermined point in the movement of the swinging arm and thereby restore the cooperation of the brake means with the turn table.
6. In combination, a turn table, a swinging arm, stop mechanism consisting of a starting lever, brake means intermediate said lever and the table to prevent operation of the latter, means tending normally to cause cooperation of the brake means with the table, a release lever having means to hold the starting lever in a position acting against the last mentioned means whereby to permit operation of the table and means controlling the positioning of the release lever to enable coaotion of the last mentioned holding means with the starting lever, there being a lug on the starting lever adapted to be engaged by the release lever to hold the starting lever in the positionmaintaining the brake means inoperative, and means on the swinging arm to engage the release lever and move the latter into a position to free the lug aforesaid and restore cooperation of the brake means with the table.
7 In combination, a turn table, a swing-' ing arm associated therewith, a release lever, a starting lever, means intermediate the starting and release levers whereby on actuating the former the release lever will be moved into a position locking the-starting lever from movement, brake means intermediate the starting lever and the table normally engaging the latter but not-cooperating with the table when the starting lever 15 in its locked position aforesaid, trip means operable by the swinging arm to engage'therelease lever to release the starting lever and restore the cooperation of the brake means with the turn table, and a stop member lim iting movement of the release lever under actuation of the said trip means.
8. In combination, a turn table, a swinging arm associated therewith, a release lever, a starting lever, means intermediate the starting and release levers whereby on actuating the former the release lever will be moved into a position locking the starting lever from movement, brake means intermediate the starting lever and the table normally engaging the latter but not cooperating with the table when'the starting lever is in its locked position aforesaid,-'; and trip means operable by the swinging arm to en gage the release lever to release the starting lever and restore the cooperation of the brake means with the turn table, said release lever having a slot therein and the starting lever having a lug to operate in said slot and to cause the movement of the release lever into a position locking the starting lever in the manner described.
