Abstract

158,300. Nolan, F. A. Oct. 2, 1919. Periodic; actuated by springs; blocks and shoes. -In automatic brakes for gramophones of the kind in which a brake releasing arm, having a friction-tight connection to the tone-arm, applies the brake at the end of a reproduction, the handoperated member, by which the brake-releasing arm is adjusted according to the length of the record, has a lost-motion connection to that arm. The brake preferably comprises a spring-retarded revoluble block. Fig. 1 is a plan view of one form of the mechanism, Fig. 4 shows the brake block, Fig. 5, the brake-releasing arm detached, and Fig. 6 a modified arrangement of the brake mechanism. The brake comprises a revoluble block 16 adapted to engage the turntable rim 10 and retarded by the pressure of a spring 17. The block is mounted on a lever C pivoted to a base 14 and held in operative and inoperative position by a spring 21. The brake is applied when a shoulder 34 on the brake-releasing member 30 engages the arm 12. The member 30 comprises a collar loose or. the neck B of the tone-arm with a radial arm 33 and with down-turned spring lugs 31 engaging frictionally in a groove in the neck B. An arm 35 provided with a handle 38 is pivoted on a pin 36 to the arm 33 and its motion is limited by down-turned lugs 37 engaging the sides of the arm 33. To adjust the mechanism for a particular record, the needle is placed at the finishing point of the record, and the handoperated arm 35 is placed in contact with the point of an adjustable screw 39. In the modified mechanism shown, Fig. 6, the collar 48 is clamped to the tone-arm neck B, and an arm 50 is pivoted friction-tight to a lug 49 on the collar. The handoperated arm 52 is loonsely pivoted to the arm 50 and has a pin-and-slot connection 53 thereto, the relative movement being limited by an adjustable screw 55. The brake 45 is held inoperative by a a trigger 46 and is applied by a spring when the trigger is released. The mechanism is adjusted for a particular record by placing the needle at the finishing point of the record and then adjusting the arm 50 by bringing the member 52 in contact with the end of the trigger 46, which is out of engagement with the brake catch and in contact with a stop 59.
