[Class 145 (i).] In a machine for boring out knots in wood and forcing glued wooden discs in the recesses, a carriage, sliding on a frame 3, carries a boring spindle 28, which is supported by a spring 31 and reciprocated by a cam 32 mounted on the shaft 23. A vertical tube 39, also carried on the carriage, contains a plunger 42 and both are spring pressed against cams 44 and 46 respectively on the shaft 23. Connected to the tube 39 is a sleeve 34 for the reception of wooden discs of the same diameter as the recess made by the boring tool 29. A glue receptacle 35 containing a roller 38 is attached to the sleeve 34 and the discs are transferred across the roller 38 to the tube 39 by a slide 37 connected by a bell crank 36 to the spindle 28. The carriage is reciprocated by a cam 18 carried by a shaft 16 gearing with the shaft 23, said cam contacting with rollers 21 carried bv the frame 3. The cam shafts are driven by a motor 8 through gearing 11, 14 and 15, and the spindle 28 rotated by a belt from a pulley to the motor spindle. In a modified construction all the cams are carried by one shaft and the discs in the sleeve are replaced by a wooden rod, a circular saw being mounted horizontally upon the frame 3 in a position swept by the sleeve for cutting discs, means being provided for clamping the rod during sawing and retaining the severed disc until it is engaged by the feeding elements. Two arms for clamping the work may be arranged one on each side of the sleeve and boring spindle and are operated in phase with the other operations by means of a cam.
