Abstract

The process of the parent Specification according to which aqueous liquids, particularly waste waters from coking plant or from cellulose or other factories, are treated with an absorbent, from which the absorbed constituents, for example phenols, are subsequently extracted by means of a solvent, retained solvent being finally driven off as by means of steam, is carried out so that access of air or other gases to the adsorbent is prevented, as far as possible, during the adsorption and extraction stages and particularly during the transition from one stage to another. When the aqueous liquid is passed upward through the adsorbent, the liquid in the treatment vessel at the termination of a treatment period is covered with a layer of the solvent and the solvent follows the liquid downward as it is withdrawn from below. The adsorption and extraction may be effected at raised temperatures, for example 40 DEG to 80 DEG C., and one of these temperatures may be higher than another.ALSO:The process of the parent Specification according to which aqueous liquids, particularly waste waters from coking plant or from cellulose or other factories, are treated with an adsorbent, from which the adsorbed constituents, for example, phenols, are subsequently extracted by means of a solvent, retained solvent being finally driven off as by means of steam, is carried out so that access of air or other gases to the adsorbent is prevented, as far as possible, during the adsorption and extraction stages and particularly during the transition from one stage to another.
