344,005. Printing-surfaces. KOHN, 0., 547, South Clark Street, Chicago, U.S.A. Nov. 21, 1929, No. 35678. [Class 100 (ii).] A lithographic printing-plate for offset printing is prepared by first producing the plate with the design in relief and then applying to the non-printing areas an inkrepellant coating of such a thickness that the design is left slightly in intaglio. A plate 11 of zinc or other suitable material, preferably formed with a grained or stippled surface 13, is provided in any suitable manner with a photomechanical half tone printing surface 15 and the non-printing areas are then provided with a coating 16 of nickel, chromium, copper, zinc, or other suitable material which may retain moisture and repel ink. The coating is slightly thicker than the depth of the non-printing areas, but is sufficiently thin that the graining or stippling of the surface 13 is reproduced on its surface. A bath suitable for depositing a coating of nickel electrolytically may be prepared by dissolving 82 lbs. of nickel sulphate and 27“ lbs. of citric acid in 375 gallons of water, adding caustic potash until the solution is only slightly acid, and then adding 54 lbs. of potassium citrate.
