Abstract
A lithographic printing plate comprises a base sheet, a sublayer on the base-plate, a copper ink-receptive layer electro-plated on the sublayer from an acid bath containing a crystal-growth reducing agent, and a non-porous water-receptive chromium layer on the copper layer. The chromium is etched away to expose the parts of the copper layer corresponding to the matter to be printed. The base sheet may be paper, synthetic plastic, aluminium or preferably steel. The steel base is degreased and a copper or nickel sublayer is electro-plated thereon, an alkaline bath being used for the copper layer. If a bright finish is required for the printing plate, a commercial brightener is included in the nickel electro-plating bath. The acid bath for producing the copper ink-receptive layer comprises copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. If a bright finish is desired, crystal growth reducing agents such as animal glue or agar, or a commercial brightener are added. For a matte finish, the crystal growth reducing agent used is a double metal salt such as aluminium potassium sulphate or sodium potassium tartrate. The final chromium layer is applied by electro-plating in a bath containing chromic acid (CrO3) and sulphuric acid, and will have a matte or bright surface depending on the surface of the copper layer underneath the chromium.
