663,842. Printing-surfaces. ALLER, C. B. Dec. 29, 1947 [Sept. 9, 1946], No. 34548/47. Drawings to Specification: Class 100 (ii). A bimetallic intaglio, lithographic or relief printing plate comprising a base metal intended to form one surface component on which is deposited a continuous metal layer to form the other surface component, is prepared by applying and developing a copying layer, covering the exposed parts of the continuous layer with a metal resist, removing the remainder of the copying layer, etching through the parts of the continuous, layer not covered by the metal resist, and finally removing the metal resist. A plate having a copper, nickel, zinc or cadmium layer on a stainless steel, chromium, chromium alloy, chromium-plated or chromium-alloy plated copper, nickel &c. base may be coated with a chromate gelatine film which after exposure is developed in calcium chloride solution; the metal resist, e.g. iron, zinc or cadmium, may be applied electrolytically by a brush, rag &c. containing an electrode connected as anode with the plate as cathode (an aqueous ferric chloride solution may be used for an iron resist); the etching fluid with an iron resist may be chromic 'plus a little sulphuric acid, or with a zinc or cadmium resist, alkali metal sulphide or polysulphide. The metal resist may be removed with sulphuric acid. Specification 483,349 is referred to.
