Abstract

564,753. Photo-mechanical printing- surfaces. AHLEN & AKERLUNDS FORLAG, PETREN, T., and STERNBERG, E. K. W. April 2, 1943, No. 5340. [Class 98 (ii)] In the production of a planographic printing- surface on a metal plate having the property of repelling greasy ink by applying a photographic sensitive layer to the plate, forming a latent image therein, developing the image so as to lay bare portions of the plate, applying to such portions a solution containing a compound of a metal which has a lower electrolytic solution pressure and also a greater receptivity for greasy printing ink than the metal of the plate so as to deposit a thin layer of the firstmentioned metal on the areas laid bare, and thereafter removing the remainder of the' photographic layer, the plate consists of or is coated with a non-oxidisable metal or metal alloy such as rust-resisting steel or steel alloy, or chromium or an alloy thereof. The solution applied to the plate after development may contain a compound of a metal which will form an alloy with the base metal; the compound may be cuprous chloride when the base metal is steel. The base-plate is first mechanically roughened or grained in known manner, and cleaned as with a solution containing formic acid, alum and nitric acid. It is coated with a light-sensitive layer which may be compounded of ammonium bichromate, manganese sulphate, albumin, gum arabic, ammonia and water, exposed, developed as with a solution containing calcium chloride, lactic acid, and alcohol, which removes the unexposed parts of the sensitive layer, laying bare areas of the base metal which are then rendered ink-receptive as by treatment with a solution containing calcium chloride, ferric chloride, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and cuprous chloride, which deposits a very thin layer of copper on the bared areas of the base metal. After making any desired corrections, the plate is made ready for printing in the usual way by greasing the surface and washing away the remaining hardened parts of the photographic layer covering the areas of the base which are to be waterreceptive and ink-repellant in the printing operation.
