Abstract
<PICT:0343936/IV/1> <PICT:0343936/IV/2> The invention of the parent Specification, according to which a vacuum or subatmospheric pressure is maintained in dry-spinning cells for artificial threads &c., the spinning being assisted, if desired, by heat or a current of air, and the threads being wound outside the cell, is modified (1) by the provision of means whereby the opening through which the filaments are withdrawn from the cell may be adjusted to an aperture of a size not substantially exceeding the cross-section of the thread, and (or) (2) by the provision of means for supplying the region of the opening with dried air. As shown, the filaments 15 spun in a cell in which a vacuum or reduced pressure is maintained, as described in the parent Specification, are withdrawn through an opening 22 of sufficient size to allow the thread to be seized and drawn to the outside of the cell. A plate 24 is pivoted on one side of the opening 22, and is so shaped that when it is swung into position with its slot 30 engaging a stud 31 on the wall of the cell, as shown in Fig. 2, the notch 25 just clears the lower edge of the opening 22, leaving a small aperture 26. Modified forms of the plate 24 are described, and means for adjusting the size of the aperture may be provided. A metal hood 40 surrounds the opening 22, and dry air, preferably warm, is supplied to the hood through a pipe 42.
