343,591. Fluid-pressure brakes. LOCKHEED HYDRAULIC BRAKE CO., Ltd. and RODWAY, J., Clemens Street, Leamington Spa. Nov. 23, 1929, No. 35964. [Class 103 (i).] A fluid-pressure brake comprises a cylinder 14 arranged within the width of a brake drum and accommodated in a recess 13 in the back plate 12 or a member associated with the back plate so that the cylinder is shielded from the parts of the brake liable to become heated. The cylinder 14 is fixed to a flange of the axle casing by studs 16 which also support a plate 20. having diverted portions forming baffles 19 which direct air around the cylinder. The piston rods 14a extend through end walls of the recess 13 to engage the brake shoes 15. An air space 21 may be provided between the cylinder and the recess on this space may be packed with asbestos. The recess may be formed by attaching a separate pocket to the inner side of the back plate in which holes are formed for access of cool air, or to the outer side, the pocket projecting through an aperture inwardly. In a modification adapted for front wheel brakes, the back plate is recessed to accommodate the stub axle also and a flanged plate bolted to the back plate surrounds and also supports the cylinder. The baffles 19 are formed by diverted extensions of the flanged plate.
