Abstract

343,294. Bombs. HATFIELD, A. W., Beaconsfield, Wayville Road, Dartford, and SWIFT, T. R., The Folly, Farningham, both in Kent. March 1, 1930, No. 3461. [Class 9 (i).] A bomb for aircraft use is made mainly of earthenware without any metal reinforcements such as are described in Specifications 233,804 and 258,649, [both in Class 9 (i), Ammunition &c.], the charge being contained directly in the earthenware cavity without coming into contact with any metal part. The internal surfaces of the earthenware may be glazed. The charge may be lachrymatory, irritant lethal, incendiary, pyrotechnic, explosive, or smoke or gas producing. As shown in the Figure, a small earthenware chamber B is screwed into the mouth of the earthenware bomb A and contains a burster C fired by the striker D of a pistol; and a guiding tail E is cemented in the rear end of the bomb. In a modification, the earthenware chamber B is dispensed with, and the burster C and its pistol is arranged in a metal bush cemented directly into the mouth of the bomb A.
