127,851. Hadfield, Sis R. A., Main, S. A., and Burnham, T. H. May 29, 1917. Projectiles.-Relates to armour-piercing bullets comprising a steel envelope, a hard steel core fitting the forward part of the envelope, and a rear plug of heavy metal. According to the invention, the core, made with an original point, is provided with a hardened steel cap. In the bullet shown in Fig. 1, this cap e is placed between the steel envelope a and the steel core b, an air space d being left. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the envelope a is thickened at its front end a<1> and hardened to form the cap. Another form is shown in Fig. 3. A further modification is also shown in the Specification, in which the cap-like head a<1> is flat and of very small axial thickness. An airdeflector f, Figs. 1 and 3, may be provided, and may be filled with air or some light substance such as cork. The ogival point of the steel core b is preferably made somewhat blunt, and the front end of the core may be made separate from the remainder.
