Abstract

341,324. Rotary pumps. ROWLANDS, J. H., Elmwood, Saundersfoot, and THOMAS, G., Hillside, Begelly, both in Pembrokeshire. Feb. 25, 1930, No. 6300. [Class 110 (ii).] Movable-abutment type.-A rotary pump of the Roots' blower type has two rotors 11, 12, each having two projections 18, 19, and two recesses 20, 21 into which the projections make sliding contact during operation. The leading edges of the projections on one rotor are convex and those on the other rotor, concave. Rolling contact between the two cylindrical rotors 11, 12 is maintained by their being driven by gear wheels. A delivery valve 25 is hinged at 26 and has a secondary valve 28 hinged at 29. Valve 25 has an arm 30 which bears on a spring 31. In a three-stage pump each rotor 11, 12 has an annular tongue on each of its lateral faces which is a running fit in a groove, to prevent leakage between the stages. Fluid trapped in the recesses can escape by way of holes 36. Lubrication is effected through oilways 35. The dimensions of the projections 18, 19 based on the radial depth of the pumping space between rotor 11 and the casing 15 are given, the distance AB in Fig. 1 being 125 per cent, BL 25 per cent, and CA<1> 25 per cent. Projections 18 are larger than projections 19.
