Winding-machines.-In a machine for winding yarn, thread, wire, or similar strand materials into a package in which the yarn etc. is traversed by being guided in a groove in a rotatable member having two oppositely directed helical grooves crossing one another and connected together at their ends to provide a continuous path for the yarn, means for compulsorily guiding the yarn &c. are provided at the crossing points of the grooves. The yarn traversing roll 15, Fig. 7, comprises two oppositely directed helical grooves 35 and 36 connected together at their ends, and crossing one another at different depths. The projecting portion formed where the grooves cross is chamfered on the appropriate edge, as at 37, so that the yarn is not diverted into the wrong groove. The roll is preferably constructed from a cylinder of steel, hardened, and fitted with end discs 30. In a yarn-winding machine the yarn y, Figs. 1 and 3, rests in the groove 36 cut in the traversing roll 15, and is guided on to the cop tube T, which is supported by a bracket 24 and rests on the drive roll 14. The roll 14 may be dispensed with and the yarn-traversing roll be used for driving as well as for guiding the yarn. The bracket supporting the yarnreceiving means is constructed so that different shaped packages may be employed. The pillar 16 supports a short horizontal bar 18, on which is pivoted the forked arm 20, which is retained in place by the collar 21. At the outer end of the arm 20 is a bearing. 23 in which an auxiliary arm 24 is swivelled, thus allowing the surface of the package to be in contact with the drive roll along its entire length.
