Abstract

378,964. Yarn and like winding machines. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO., 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Bood, A. E. ; 9, Fairweather Avenue, Cranston, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) May 21, 1931, No. 15090. Convention date, March 19. Addition to 339,679, [Class 120 (ii), Spinning, twisting, &c.]. [Class 120 (ii).] The device for traversing the yarn described in the parent Specification is modified in that portions of the guiding groove 50, which are disposed on opposite sides of a cross-over a, Fig. 4, are off -set with respect to one another as at 52 in order that the yarn which has a tendency to lag in its traverse may not catch on the point p and be diverted into the groove 51. Only one of the crossing helices has its parts off-set as a cross-over, e.g. at a the groove 51 continues normally. The off-set groove 50 at a is, however, shallower than the groove 51. The traversing-roll 15, which may also act as a driving drum, may be of metal, wood or composition and is formed with oppositely extending helical grooves 50, 51 joined at their ends and forming five points of intersection a .. e, Figs. 3 and 4. At a the normal helical course of the groove 50 is staggered, the continuation being off-set to the right at 52, Fig. 4. At b the groove 50 is off-set to the right at 53, and is shallower than the groove 51. At c, d, e the groove 50 is made of greater depth than the groove 51 and is continued normally, the groove 51 being off-set to the left as shown at 54, 55, 56. The grooves are of the same depth throughout the greater portion of their extent and at the central cross-over c either groove may be staggered according to which groove is made the deeper. Each yarn from a supply bobbin B, Fig. 2, passes through a guide 35, a clearer 34, a tension device 32 and over a bail 45 to the yarn receiver T mounted on a spindle 5 carried by an arm 16. Each bobbin B is mounted in a supply holder 40 carried by an arm 39 from brackets 27, 29 and comprising a rotatable hub 41 having radial spindles 42, the bobbin being retained in place when turned into the downward position by circular side strips 43 engaging under the head bl of the bobbin. In a modification, the traversing-roll 15 may be separate from the driving drum or the package may be wound on a positively-driven winding spindle. The thread bail 45 may be adapted to act as a stop-motion detector.
