[Class 120 (ii)] Filaments or yarns are cross wound on a package by feeding a filament to the package over a helically grooved or slotted traverse drum which drives the package and obliquely thereto with a slant in the direction of the traverse controlled by the groove or slot, the helical groove or slot extending in one direction only through the full length of the drum to give the filament the controlled traverse in one direction only and having at its ends, oppositely directed extensions one of which guides the arriving filament into the groove or slot and the other reverses the slant of the filament at the end filaments, comprises a number of shafts or lap rods rotatably mounted on a rotatable frame and coaxial therewith, a pair of rotatable concentric discs of which the upper disc of the controlled traverse; when conical packages are being wound the groove or slot traverses the filament from the major to the minor diameter of the package. As shown the filament is drawn from a spool 1 through a guide 5 to the traverse drum 7 and package 2, the spool and guide being laterally offset with respect to the central transverse plane of the drum and package so that the filament is fed with a slant in the direction of the traverse given by the groove 10 in the drum. The groove 10 has short oppositely inclined extensions 12, 13 at its ends and a widened part 16 adjacent the extension 12. At the end of its controlled traverse the filament is engaged by the extension 13, slips out of the groove, and slides along the drum towards a stop 8 which limits its uncontrolled traverse, the extension 12 then engaging the filament so that it slips into the part 16 of the groove and is traversed thereby. The pitch of the groove may decrease slightly in either direction and one or more guides may be arranged near the guide 5 to equalize the drag on the filament as it is traversed ; the drag or tension may be automatically regulated by a pivoted finger bearing against the filament between a pair of guides and actuated by worm gearing and links from the shaft of the drum. The drum 7 may be used for winding packages of two different tengths by forming a notch 21 at one side of the groove at a point where the traverse to give the reduced length of package is to be reversed, the depth of the groove at this point being reduced, so that the yarn will slip out, by pushing rod 23 through a hole in the drum to form a ramp at the shoulder 22 formed by the notch 21.
