339,498. McCall, A. K. Dec. 11, 1929. Lathes; drivers and carriers; mandrels.- In a lathe provided with a work turret a turntable c, mounted on a slide d, has journals c<1> and c<2> for spindles f and g, each of the spindles carries a mandrel such as f<1> to take the blanks i, and has a plate f<2> with dogs f<1> to bear against one end of the blanks; the plate runs loose on the spindle f, projections n<1> effecting connection between it and the spindle sleeve n. The work may either be positively rotated, by projections on the driving disc c engaging recesses in the work carrier, or frictionally driven as shown, wherein a plate j, loosely connected through studs and springs to c, has dogs j<3> which bear aganist the blanks and cause rotation. On completion of the operation on one set of blanks which may be one of turning or grinding, the slide d is moved away from the headstock by hand or automatically, and the turntable rotated to present a fresh set of blanks, fixed in position while the others were being operated upon.
