729,344. Lathes. HERSAN & CIE. Nov. 26, 1952 [Feb. 7, 1952], No. 29914/52. Class 83 (3). A lathe comprises a headstock carrying two rotatable parallel work-spindles and a rotatable tool-holding plate in front of said spindles, the plate having equidistantly spaced holes in which tool-holders are mounted, the tool-holders being greater in number than the workpieces. Two work-spindles 3, 4, Fig. 3, are provided in the lathe headstock, the work-clamping arrangements for which are controlled by hand-levers 5, 6. An indexible plate 7, Fig. 2, opposite the spindle ends is fed longitudinally on a carriage by a handle 9. Holes 8 are provided concentrically in the plate for tool-holders, the opposite pairs of tools 11, 13, Fig. 4, acting simultaneously on workpieces 12, 13 rotated by the spindles. The locking device for the indexing mechanism operates automatically as the plate is fed towards the work and returned but may be disengaged by a hand-lever 10. When the locking arrangement for the toolplate is released, a grooving or cutting-off operation can be performed by rotating the plate. Only two tool-holders are shown in Fig. 4 for the sake of clarity.
