Abstract

1,165,171. Machine tool details. KEARNEY & TRECKER Ltd. 18 Nov., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965; 7 Dec., 1965], Nos. 49329/65 and 51880/65. Headings B3B, B3C, B3N and B3T. In a multiple operation machine tool such as an automatic lathe having a first work-holder and a second work-holder, means are provided for carrying out machining operations on a workpiece in each of the work-holders in first and second locations respectively. Following a machining operation in the first work-holder in a first location the workpiece is transferred from the first work-holder to the second work-holder which subsequently moves from the first location to a second location in which the workpiece is held by the second work-holder whilst further machining operations are carried out by a tool holder incorporating a number of rotatable tools which may be selectively presented to the workpiece in the second location. The first workholder is formed by the chuck in the machine spindle, the second work-holder comprises a swinging arm member 100 pivotally carried on the machine frame and carrying a collet type work-holder 105 at its free end. The holder 105 is adapted to receive a workpiece from the lathe chuck and transfer the workpiece from the first location to the second location during which movement co-operating abutments 121 and 117 on the machine frame and arm respectively, effect clamping of the workpiece in the holder 105 by actuation of a rack 116 and lever 109 on the arm 100. The arm 100 is positionable in the second location wherein a tool holder in the form of an indexable turret 16 with a plurality of rotatable tools (not shown) in sockets 17 therein is adapted to selectively present the tools to the workpiece whilst held in the second work-holder. A further drilling tool holder 96 is secured to the machine frame for use in the second location and is vertically movable on a slideway 98. The drive to the drill tool holder 96 and to the rotatable tools in the turret 16 is effected from an independent motor 6 through gearing and shafts (see Fig. 4). The drive for indexing the turret and for the reciprocatable movement of the turret transversely of the indexing axis is provided from a drive shaft 28 driven from the main motor of the lathe through chain and sprocket means, the actual reciprocation of the turret being provided through a cam 33, lever 31 and rack and quadrant 29. The turret tool holders have incorporated in their drive clutch members which are spring loaded which operate to provide forward and reverse rotation when a screwing tool is used. The machine is set up to operate in an automatic sequence.
