Abstract

338,534. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 17, 1929. Caoutchouc, synthetic.-The polymerization of diolefines is effected in presence of alkali or alkaline earth metals or their alloys in particles of uniform size, that is to say, the average diameters of the various particles do not differ by more than 10 per cent. The particles may be made by sieving the mixed particles produced by comminuting the metal in liquids or by extending the metal as wire which is mechanically cut into uniform pieces. The polymerization may be effected in presence of solvents or diluents or substances which favourably influence the reaction such as dioxane, vinyl ethers and acetals, and the temperature may be between 0‹ C. and 90‹ C. In examples (1) butadiene with the addition of dioxane is polymerized in presence of balls of sodium of 1.1 mm. diameter at 40‹ C. in an iron autoclave maintained in rolling motion; (2) butadiene with an addition of vinyl, ethyl ethers is polymerized in presence of the balls of sodium in a stirring autoclave; (3) butadiene with an addition of vinyl ethyl ether is polymerized in presence of sodium in pieces of 0.35 mm. diameter in a rotating autoclave.
