Abstract

338,286. Morin, R. L. M. Oct. 3, 1928, [Convention date]. Piston type.-Apparatus, more particularly for cooking tapioca by steam, but applicable to treating any material with any gas, comprises a treatment chamber 1 to which the gas is admitted through a heater 11 and from which it is exhausted through a valve controlled duct 14, a conveyer 2 which carries the material through the chamber 1 and has sealing means 7, 8 co-operating with long narrow passages 5, 6 at the entrance to and exit from the chamber. In the case of steam cooking, the top of the chamber is curved so that condensed steam runs towards the sides and does not fall on the material. A shield 13 prevents steam from impinging directly on the conveyer. The conveyer consists of a number of parallel narrow spaced bands, e.g. of steel, connected by cross members 15, Fig. 4. Yielding pads 7, 8 H are attached above and below the members 15, or are arranged between the members 15. The securing bolts or rivets are accommodated inside the body of the pads 7, 8 so as not to prevent the pads from contacting with the passages 5, 6. The conveyer may be adapted to receive granular material by securing overlapping plates 16 to the face of the conveyer by rivetting the forward edges of the plates to the bands at 17. In modifications, the height of the pads 7 is adjustable by metal packing strips, or the pads 7 each consist of a resilient strip secured to the cross member 15, a T-bar secured to the strip and a flexible sealing-blade secured to the vertical web of the T-bar. The conveyer may consist of a single endless band of rubber, fibre or the like, and the sealing pads may be of anti-friction metal with springs or rubber parts interposed between the pads and the belt.
